As of 1999, Consolidated Natural Gas Co. was acquired by Dominion Resources, Inc. Consolidated Natural Gas Company. (CNG) engages in the exploration for and production of oil and gas, and provision of energy marketing services in the United States. The company operates in three segments: Delivery, Energy, and Exploration and Production. The Delivery segment includes regulated gas distribution and customer service operations, as well as nonregulated retail energy marketing operations. As of December 31, 2006, CNG’s regulated gas distribution subsidiaries served approximately 1.7 million residential, commercial, and industrial gas sales and transportation customers in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia; and its nonregulated retail energy marketing businesses served approximately 1.5 million residential and commercial gas and electric customer accounts in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Midwest regions of the United States.
The Energy segment operates a regional interstate pipeline and storage system; and a liquid natural gas import and storage facility. It also includes gathering and extraction activities, as well as producer services, including aggregation of gas supply and related wholesale activities. This segment has approximately 7,800 miles of gas transmission, gathering, and storage pipelines located in the states of Maryland, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia; and operates 17 underground gas storage fields located in New York, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. The Exploration and Production segment explores for, develops, and produces gas and oil. Its exploration and production operations are located in producing basins in the lower 48 states, including the outer continental shelf and deepwater areas of the Gulf of Mexico. This segment owned 5.6 trillion cubic feet of proved equivalent natural gas and oil reserves, as of December 31, 2006. The company was incorporated in 1999 and is based in Richmond, Virginia.
Consolidated Natural Gas Company (CNG) was one of the nation's few integrated natural gas systems, and one of its largest natural gas systems. CNG produces, transports, and distributes natural gas, as well as provides energy marketing services, through North America. CNG also explores and produces natural gas and oil in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, and provides energy services to international markets. The company owns the largest group of underground gas-storage fields in the nation, and is involved in subsidiary businesses including gas by-products and oil production.
CNG's varied functions are implemented through its subsidiaries. Consolidated Natural Gas Service Co. is responsible for administration and technical services. CNG Producing Co. explores and produces natural gas and oil. CNG Energy Services markets gas and is one of the ten largest independent wholesale power marketers in the United States. CNG Power Services markets electricity; CNG Research performs research; CNG Coal Co. is involved in coal mining; and CNG Transmission operates a regional interstate pipeline system serving each of the company's distribution subsidiaries.
